The Lisbon Bible
A.D. 1482
Facsimile
The Lisbon Bible is one of the finest illuminated medieval Hebrew manuscripts ever produced. It was copied and decorated by Samuel, son of Samuel Ibn Mussa for Joseph son of Judah surnamed al-Hakim of Lisbon, and was completed in 1482.
The Lisbon Bible is unique among Hebrew manuscripts because it was copied on vellum as a codex (a manuscript in book form, rather than a scroll) and can be dated with specificity. It is a testimony to the rich cultural life of the Portuguese Jews prior to their expulsion and forced “conversions” of December, 1496.
