Crown of Thorns
Replica
A “crown of thorns” was woven from thorn branches and placed on the head of Jesus Christ before His crucifixion. The biblical record is this:
The Roman soldiers were mocking Jesus by placing a crude crown on His head to represent the claim that He was “King of the Jews,” along with a purple robe. As thorns are often representative of sin, the “crown of thorns” indicated that Jesus would bear the sins of the world. Jesus was indeed the suffering King on behalf of all mankind.
This replica of the “crown of thorns” is constructed of thorn branches similar to those that grow in the Jerusalem area of Palestine. Ruth Graham, wife of evangelist Billy Graham, had a similar replica of the “crown of thorns” on the wall in her home, and explained that during her times of painful suffering leading up to her death she would look at the “crown of thorns” and recognize that her suffering was slight compared to the suffering endured by her Lord Jesus Christ.
- “And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" (Matthew 27:29)
- They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" (Mark 15:17,18)
- “And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; and they began to come up to Him and say, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and to give Him slaps in the face. Pilate came out again and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him." Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold, the Man!" (John 19:2-5)
